The Mental Health Foundation has published a free tip sheet addressing how sunny days and warm weather affect mental health.
It is available to download by clicking the image to the right.
The guidance notes that sunlight can benefit mental health in several ways: it boosts serotonin, the neurotransmitter linked to wellbeing and happiness; helps regulate the body's circadian rhythm, improving sleep quality; and encourages outdoor activity such as walking, gardening and sport.
But the charity also flags ways hot weather can take a toll, offering three key reminders:
* Don't expect to be at 100% in the heat — be kind to yourself, take breaks, and allow extra time for tasks.
* Heat can heighten stress and anxiety — simple breathing exercises and short bursts of mindfulness can help during difficult moments.
* Some medications make it harder to stay cool and hydrated — drink plenty of water, avoid the sun during peak hours, and keep medication out of direct sunlight.
The Foundation's overall message:
enjoy the summer weather, but stay mindful of its effects — "every body is a summer body."
